THE UMMI  STORY

Born and raised in Cape Town, It was in 2019 that I became a mom for the first time, just before the covid pandemic. At the time i was working in the corporate world - truth be told, that was never where my passion was. When I was due to return to work from maternity - there was nothing to return to, and I found myself home taking care of baby, which for me was one of lock downs blessings in disguise. Being a "bag" person for as long as I can remember, the time felt right as they say - to make the change from a 9-5 office job, to pursuing my passion, which was designing and creating handbags. I took up a course in leather craft and handbag design. This only fueled my passion even more and I knew I needed to launch my own range of handbags. I also knew exactly what my first bag was going to be. Having found out I was pregnant with baby number 2 in 2021, it was a no brainer - I needed to design a midi baby nappy bag, that was classy, lightweight, easy to manage, and carries just the essentials! I loved bags - but I could never find a decent bag to for the moments when all you need are the essentials and not the entire kitchen and closet, aaand makes you look classy and well put together! I felt the need to design solution driven concepts for the "modern - day" woman. I love being organised and ready to deal with emergencies when at a restaurant or in the shopping mall without needing to lug around a big nappy bag filled with items I didn't actually need. If I felt I needed more, I would leave the extras in the car, but never needed to carry a traditional baby bag around with me.

Hence, the UMMI ESSENTIALS was born!!

Being a mom of now 2 babies, I have tried and tested the UMMI ESSENTIALS and it has never let me down. I even started using it on my mini travel trips, and thus designed it so that it can be used and enjoyed as more than just a nappy bag, but a travel handbag and an any day bag as well.

The Ummi range has since grown to include "The Ummi Everything" - designed to hold everything a Mom might need - perfect as a travel bag, nappy wallets, dummy pouches and straps - all designed with the functionality of being able to be repurposed long after your baby is no longer a baby.

"Ummi" -  which means Mother in Arabic, was fitting for the brand name, as my passions, dreams and motherhood all came together around the same time. I believe not one could have happened without the other, and so the timing, and the chosen name was perfect.
